By now many high school students are getting into the full swing of their summer jobs. Just in time, the feds have tightened the reins on child labor safety rules.
Hidden inside the new Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) is a provision that raises the penalties for some FLSA violations. Under the new regs, employees can pay up to:
- $50,000 for the death or serious injury of a worker under 18, and
- $11,000 for violating wage and hour rules for underage workers.
What’s it mean for employers? The laws themselves haven’t changed, but it’s more important than ever for managers to look out for young employees’ safety.
